Weekend break to Oslo, Norway

I didn't actually have much of a choice about going to Oslo - Toni rang to check I wasn't busy this weekend, and then informed me she's just booked us on a cheap RyanAir flight!  Later Toni's friend Jacquie decided to to join us too - I wonder if she knew what she was getting herself into?

It turned out that the cheap flight on RyanAir to Oslo was cheap because it doesn't really go to Oslo at all.  Instead we landed at 9:30pm an airport two hours away by bus from Oslo!  Although we had a seating guarantee, in fact we did not get seats and Toni and Jacquie stood for the entire journey and I sat on the floor and dozed!  Actually I must have slept quite well as I didn't believe Toni and Jacquie when they said the trip had been two hours long - not until we returned on Sunday afternoon anyway.

The sculptures around town were quite eye-opening!

Although we had started the evening well with surreptitious drinking of our duty-free vodka on the flight, we weren't really up for it when we eventually got to our hotel at midnight, after a short taxi journey that cost us about £15!  We ventured out for one drink (which was very expensive - are you seeing a theme here?), then went back to bed.

We knew we didn't have a tight itinerary on Saturday, so we slept in a bit and got up in time for breakfast, which we were pleased to find was so much more than the stale bread roll and ham and cheese we had been expecting.

We then headed out into the light rain and cool air to check out the town.  We wandered about for a few hours, going down to the harbour side, which we imagined would be very nice in the summer.  We also went up to the castle/fortress and although it wasn't open to go in, we did see what appeared to be the changing of the guard.
