I am currently coping with the rude shock of having come back from three weeks holiday and finding the weather miserable and cold (although it will get much colder, I know!) and plenty of work to do.  I’ve been back for over three weeks already and have just been so busy!  Sorry to those who’ve checked back here for updates to find nothing!

Africa was amazing.  It was a fabulous holiday, with good people (the best represented “nationality” being South Islanders, for once!) and loads of memories.  We saw all the big animals – lions, rhinos, elephants, cheetahs, zebras, wildebeest, buffalo and loads more.  I took over 700 photos in the three weeks!  (Don’t worry, I won’t put them all up on the site for you to look at!!)  We visited a Masaai Village and a fishing village, we walked with giraffes, sailed past hippos, waved to local children from our big monster truck and ate fabulous camp meals thanks to our aptly-named cook Goodluck.  We ended up on Zanzibar island for a few days at the beach.  I did five dives and thoroughly enjoyed them, with the underwater sites rivalling those above ground and those in the Red Sea even.

Unfortunately the start and end of my trip was marred somewhat by a couple of airline-related mishaps – I arrived in Nairobi safe and sound ready to leave on safari the following morning, but unfortunately my luggage did not!  I was without it for five days in the end.  Surviving with the clothes on my back and not a lot else was an adventure in itself, made more difficult by the new security rules meaning I had no toiletries whatsoever with me!

Then sadly at the end of my trip, my visit to see my sponsored child Anna was very nearly cancelled completely when I turned up at the airport to discover my seat had been sold to someone else as I hadn’t confirmed it!  I guess one day I’ll be able to laugh about my distressed behaviour at the airport as I ran around wailing and wanting a solution.  The end of the long story is that I did get to meet Anna and her family and it was an incredible experience.

I’m really busy at work which is good.  Last week I did my first ever contested hearing which was a real buzz.  I think I did OK and we got the order, which is the main thing!  I haven’t told work that I’m leaving yet so things are starting to awkward around here as I try and think up imaginative reasons why I don’t want to pay a deposit for the Xmas party and the like!  It will be a relief to tell them when I do, but I am just cautious about doing so too early.

I’ve been spending my evenings catching up with loads of friends as the time I have left here is flying by now.  It has hit me now that I’m leaving and I have mixed feelings about it – glad to be going home to see family and friends, and definitely glad to be getting away from this winter, but sad to be leaving my friends here and really quite anxious about what life holds for me back in sleepy New Zild.

I gave notice at work today, which is one thing off my mind.  I was starting to feel a bit fraudulent discussing plans for December cover, so it was time to do so.  My boss Neeta took it well and was able to see the “good timing” in it which is good.

I went to Manchester for the weekend to say goodbye to Kat and Andy, my very good friends up there.  It was a completely relaxed weekend with a bit of curtain shopping and the cinema for Casino Royale.  And rather a few tears when it came to leaving – the first of my goodbyes and one of the hardest ones I expect.

The Saturday before was really good – I met Bianca to watch the changing of the guards at Buckingham Palace in the morning.  I’d heard it wasn’t much good, so I didn’t have high expectations and I really rather enjoyed the little men marching along!  We then met Marie and went to the New Zealand war memorial unveiling in Hyde Park.  It was a nice event to be part of, and quite special with the Queen, Charles and Camilla, Prince William, Tony Blair and our very own Helen Clark all attending.  It was Memorial Day, so a special way to remember it.  After a pint in a warm pub (to defrost after five hours standing in the cold!), I went home to get ready for dinner at the Oxo Tower – another thing on my list crossed off!  It was a superb evening with divine food – and my divine dress!

I caught up with Ben, Jennifer, Eram and Vanessa last week and have more “dates” with friends set up for the remaining two weeks I have left.  I’m feeling really strange about it all – looking forward to seeing my family, and to having a break, but I’m getting really tummy-tied about the thought of having to say goodbye to my friends and I’m really quite anxious about what life holds for me out there.  I am just going to allow myself as much time as I need to find out!

I've had a rough couple of days.  I am very aware that I am giving up my life here and saying goodbye to all my friends and the great sides of London life.  I am panicking about packing (I've got too much stuff!) and worried about the last-minute details, of which there seem to be many.  It's a busy week at work, which I really don't need.

But on the bright side, I had an absolutely fantastic send-off on Saturday night, with about 25 people coming to see me off.  It was so nice to have so many friends around me and I dressed up for the occassion in my new silk dress!

I've got a busy week ahead - I met up with Bianca tonight and have got a date iwth Jennifer tomorrow, with Ben on Wednesday and then Marie, Bianca, Tanya and Eram should all be popping in on Friday and Saturday.

Since last writing a couple of weeks ago, I've been to the Mousetrap with Marie - the longest running theatre production in London.  And I'm not gonna tell you who dunnit... I then spent a weekend in Switzerland catching up with my host family, and Pippa for lunch on Friday.  It was so nice to see my family - we didn't do a lot - the cinema and some bowling, a cheese fondue and not a lot else, but it was really nice to see them all.

Last Monday I was delighted to be surprised by Ben and Becky to a drink at Tower 42/Vertigo, a fabulous bar on the 42 floor in the City.  It was such a treat!  I caught up with Eram on Wednesday for a last night in Soho and on Saturday Marie and I (sought of) visited Portobello Market in Notting Hill, something that's been on my list for years!

I imagine this will be my last weekly update while here in London - and that means for this website!  Scary!!  I have set up a new web-blog, as I can't imagine not recording my life on a weekly basis!  It's here, feel free to have a look: http://rochellepbrown.bebo.com
