Monday 4 August
Once again the weather is amazing. They're predicting 33degrees today and there are bets
being taken on whether it will get to 100degrees fahrenheit, which it has never done before here. It's just dreadful
having to be in the office!
Luckily it was fine for the weekend too. I spent most of it reading in the park, although
I also went for a run and was out on my bike a bit.
Saturday night I went to Hampstead Heath again for a picnic with Adeline and her flatmates,
which was just great. There were hundreds of people, all lying about on the grass with picnic baskets, blankets and
food and wine. It made for quite a special evening, although the clear skies actually meant it got quite cold when the
sun went down.
Work is much the same. August
is the holiday month, so there will staff going on holiday for much of the month and there are no evening meetings, which
will be nice. This week I am looking forward to going to Prague on Friday!
Thursday 7 August
I've had a particulary theatrical week this week. On Tuesday
Adeline and I were given free tickets to 'Our House', a west end musical based on music by Madness. ('Our house, in the middle of our street', 'It must be love, love, love'
etc.) It was another great show with toe-tapping music, innovative sets and the world's fastest costume changes ever,
by the star who was on stage for virtually the entire show. We were given the tickets by Jarlath (who works with us)
and who knows a guy who worked on the show - he's a magician and so there was real magic used to help with those costume changes.
This guy is side-lines as Harry Potter's (aka Daniel Radcliffe) personal magic tutor, as the star has, oddly enough, developed
an interest in magic. So there you go, only three degrees of separation between me and Harry Potter!
Last night I went to a quite different production. 'Punchkin's Enchantment' was put on
by a local theatre group in various oarks in South East London. Last night it was in the local park and I was glad I
went. The play involved the audience having to get up and follow the actors through the park to various 'stages' set
up around the park. By the end of the show it was dark of course and the last set had small fires burning on a large
portion of the park. It was all rather well done and certainly something different for a change.
It was also very pleasant thanks to the ridiculous weather that we are having here at the moment.
It hot 35.6degrees yesterday and was as hot at 6pm as I have ever felt it at noon. It's causing chaos and much complaining
from users of the trains and tubes and bookies were taking bets on whether it will break to 100 degree fahrenheit mark, which
it has never done in the UK before. The odds are that it might.
Wednesday 13 August
I have just got back from the Czech Republic and it's a bit of a shock to be back at the office
after feeling as though I've been away for weeks. For more info, see Beer and Beauty in Bohemia, which won't have any photos for another week or so.
So, other than my fabulous trip away, there's not a lot to report today. I'm looking
forward to going to Glasgow on Friday to see Justine and celebrate her birthday by checking out the scottish pub scene!
Monday
18 August
I spent this weekend in Glasgow, catching up with Justine, who celebrated
her birthday on Friday. I had chosen to take the train, which I may not do again as it was a very long trip! But
I read and dozed and made it in to Glasgow in time for pizza and wine for dinner at Justine's new flat and then into town
to check out the Glasgow pub scene. We had a great time, just like old times in Dunedin! And things are much cheaper
than London too, which added a further pleasing element to the evening!
We spent the days wandering around the shops, catching up on gossip
and we took a bus tour of the city sights which was very interesting. Saturday night took us out again, this time to
the Walkabout, an Australian themed pub. Here we were in our element as we ate wedges and nachoes for dinner, drank
Fosters and Steinlarger and watched the All Blacks thrash the Wallabies in the Bledisloe Cup final! What a night!
Sunday I was very glad that I have still not got too complacent
about taking the train as when we turned up at the station at 1610 for my 1631 train, it turned out my ticket was wrongly
printed and it was in fact a 1613 train. Thank god I caught it as missing that would have meant arriving at London at
2:30am, as part of the train lines are down for repairs at the moment. Another extremely long trip had me home by midnight,
tired but happy.
Oh, and it's true about Scotsmen wearing nothing under their kilts!
I know, I checked! ;-)
Thursday
21 August
Last night I realised that this week there are eight days in a row
when I haven't been home in the evening. No wonder I don't feel I know my flatmates! This week has been
really busy. On Monday I used tickets I won to go to the Imax cinema and see 'Everest' with Chris, a NZ friend. This
was an amazing documentary following a group of climbers trying to make the summit. The scenery is incredible on the
Imax screen, which is the largest screen in the UK. And on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday nights I've got dinner dates
with various people. I am actually looking forward to a weekend in town, a chance to catch up some sleep and shopping
and do some serious runs, as I am still training for the RunLondon on 7 September, and I've got a wee way to go yet!
Monday is bank holiday which means a day off (with no pay). I've booked a ticket to My Fair Lady, the west end show
which ends its two year season next week. So, I'm keeping busy anyway, which is good.
Tuesday
26 August
Yesterday was 'Bank Holiday', which is a mixed blessing for a temp.
It meant a long weekend, but also means no pay for Monday. But I must admit it was very nice to have a long weekend,
and to even have a weekend at home, after being so busy recently.
Friday night I went to the stage show 'Chicago'. It was one
that I have been wanting to see, having loved the movie. The show was veru similar to the movie (or rather, the movie
is very similar to the show) and I really enjoyed it. I rounded off the long weekend by seeing 'My Fair Lady' on Monday
night. This show is ending its two year season this week, so I was desperate to see it before it ended. The show
was fabulous, lovely music and singing and wonderful period costumes and big sets.

Tuesday
2 September
This weekend I went to Liverpool with Justine. I took the
train up on Saturday and back on Sunday but we had a good 24 hours or so there. Saturday we checked out the Cathedral
and wandered around the town. We went out on Saturday night to check out the Liverpool nightlife and there was entertainment
enough in gawking at the outfits worn by the girls up there! Remember the 80s and those terrible ra-ra skirts, wide-neck
sweatshirt tops with wide horizontal stripes and chunky, brightly coloured plastic jewellery? Well it's all alive and
kicking in North England! We felt positively over dressed in our knee length skirts!
On Sunday we did the Beatles Magical Mystery Bus Tour.
There was a little more 'here's the house where Paul was born' than I really needed, as not as much information about the
band itself than I would have liked, but it was interesting nonetheless. It certainly seemed to be to the liking of
a die-hard Spanish woman who had obviously travelled a long way to see where her idols grew up.
The train trip home was made more interesting by a young Pentacostal
Christian who felt the need to preach to us. I rather enjoyed challenging her and I must say I was still left unconvinced
that God really wants Catholic Priests who bugger little boys in heaven but he doesn't want me!
Monday 8 September
My big event this weekend was the Nike 10k Run London. And
I did it! I am rather proud of myself as when I started 'training' six weeks ago, I could barely run for 20 minutes.
Yesterday I completed the 10kms in 1:12:52 (without slowing to a walk even once!). Hardly a record breaker, but quite
respectable. You can even see me head to the finish line by clicking here!
Last week I had my first evening meeting for the new 'season', which
means that we're back into the swing of things at work, after a quiet August. However, things might be changing at work
as they are interviewing people for our temp positions at the moment. I'll keep you posted. We had an interesting
meeting with our landlord who is a young guy with not a lot of business acumen. There's another meeting this week at
which we hope to get things sorted out. While I would love to throw my notice on the table in protest, I simply can't
be bothered moving. Also this week I am going to a Scrutiny Officers mingling event at London City Hall, which should
be interesting. Apparantly there's some good views from up there so I might have to take my camera!
Thursday 11 September
On Tuesday night I went to a scrutiny function at the London Assembly's City Hall. The building is an amazing futuristic
round thing, metallic grey in colour. Inside it keeps with the round theme with access between lower floors by a spiralling
ramp. The function was on the top, ninth, floor which offered great views over the city. It's right next to the
beautiful Tower Bridge and I was even lucky enough to see the bridge raised to allow a ship to travel underneath. (The
bridge is raised about 300 times per year they say.) And of course I saw David Blaine, the street magician who's latest
stunt is to sit for 44 days in a perspex box suspended from a crane near Tower Bridge. There were a hundred or more
people milling about looking up when I was there. I guess it was handy to have an excuse to go down there so that now
I can say I saw him, but really, my life was not enriched for the experience. What was worth it was seeing the 'busker'
who's act seemed to consist of imitating David Blaine sitting or lying in his box. At least he was making some money
out if it!
Yesterday I FINALLY got my photos from the Czech Republic back from the evil clutches of the mail order photo developers
and I will work hard to get them onto the site.
Friday 19 September
Last night I was part of a flash mob! This was one of the things on my list of 100 things to do in London, so I
made the effort to get along there, especially as I have a feeling that the concept will soon die out. I can't find
anything in the news today about it, so perhaps it's already old news. But it was fun. We were told to gather
in one of six pubs in Soho, depending on our star sign. This meant that there were effectively six, smaller, mobs before
the main mob, as the six pubs were crowded with mobsters! When I arrived, the crowd had already spilled out onto the
footpath. Soon small peices of paper were being handed out with the instructions for the flash mob. We had to
arrive at Soho Square at 6:30pm on the dot, carrying the book we had earlier been told to bring. We had to swap this
book with a complete stranger. Whenever you saw a swap take place, you had to clap. And when you heard clapping,
you had to clap! This meant that for 15 minutes, the large mob (I heard someone estimate it at 400 people) stood in
a corner of Soho Sqaure, clapping and cheering vurtually non-stop! It was good for a giggle. I had gone alone
so I chatted to people there and everyone seemed to have fun! The funniest thing was the reaction of people who weren't
in on it. They stood around the edge of the mob, craning their necks to see into the 'centre' and see who/what the attraction
was. Only of course there was no centre of the mob. We were equally involved. One person saw us all
carrying books and when she saw my book was by Frank Skinner, her eyes lit up and she walked off saying to her friend, 'Frank
Skinner is here!' At 6:45pm we all disbursed quickly and I assume that Soho Square was quiet again within minutes.
This is the London Flash Mob site. There's nothing on here
yet but I assume there will be details and photos on here soon: www.geocities.com/londonmobs
Monday 29 September
Got my laptop last week and got connected to the internet at the
weekend - hasn't stopped me from writing this from work though! I am now going to get my photos onto here - but give
me a little time.
Friday night I met up with some kiwi connections and had a great
night meeting new people. I am now signed up for a ski trip in March! I had a cruisy day on Saturday and on Sunday
went to the Science Museum and crossed two things off my List of Things To Do - saw the 'Rocket' and the Titanic Exhibition.
The exhibition was really good and I even had to hold back a tear! It was also quite cool to know that I have already
seen the Lord Of The Rings exhibition which opened here last week for £13 tickets that have to be booked about two weeks in
advance!
I checked out a flat too, as I am moving at the end of October.
Nice place and nice people but not quite what I'm looking for, so search continues - I hate it!
